The Top 5 Books on My 2018 Book List

By Juan Gonzalez
Grades 3–5

A fresh year means 12 months of new book releases! For me, keeping track of books that are soon to be released is just as exciting as getting to actually read them. As with every year, 2018 is shaping out to be an impressive year for books. Today I wanted to share the top 5 books that I'm eagerly waiting to get my hands on.

    My Top 5

Love by Matt de la Peña, Illustrated by Loren Long

Raise your hand if you love Newbery Medal-winning author Matt de la Peña. As a reader, if I enjoy a book by an author, I stick with them for life. Peña is one of my favorites. I first discovered his work with the picture book Last Stop on Market Street.

I have read so many great things about his new book, Love. This poetic picture book tells the story of how love is the bond that connects us all. With beautiful words and dazzling illustrations by Loren Long, this book is set to become a beloved favorite when it’s released on January 9, 2018.

The Word Collector by Peter H. Reynolds

Peter H. Reynolds is another author that continuously writes touching and powerful stories. After watching this video on Scholastic’s YouTube page, I instantly fell in love with Reynolds’ new book titled The Word Collector.

This is a story about a boy named Jerome who doesn’t collect stamps or coins, but instead he collects words. A tale that will remind readers about the power of words that we share and use. Jerome and his words will hit shelves on January 30, 2018.

Understanding Texts and Readers: The Complete Comprehension Handbook by Jennifer Serravallo

If Jennifer Serravallo had a fan club, I would join it. She is an exceptional educator who writes professional books that are filled with research-based strategies, paramount topics, and they're reader-friendly too.

This year she is releasing Understanding Texts and Readers: The Complete Comprehension Handbook. Starting with instructional level J, this book is a guide to help teachers understand reader’s behaviors, what challenges they might encounter, and how to turn those observations into powerful instruction. This book will be released on January 31, 2018

The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown

Have you read The Wild Robot by Peter Brown? Ya’ll, this story won my heart back in 2016 and I have yet to stop praising the book every chance I get. Click here to check out a video of me announcing the sequel to my third graders. Their response is unforgettable.

This story is a fantastic adventure about a robot that washes up on an island filled with creatures. When the robot is awoken from her slumber, she begins her journey to becoming part of the island and figuring out what it means to be wild. On March 13, 2018, the sequel titled The Wild Robot Escapes will be released and I assure you, I will be devouring this book he moment it hits my hands.

The Bad Guys in Alien vs Bad Guys by Aaron Blabey

Do you know Mr. Wolf, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Snake, and Mr. Shark? I have to keep up with these Bad Guys to keep my credibility with my third graders. This is a series that many of my readers adore. They read my copies, they purchase their own, and they’re always asking, “When is the next one coming out?”.

This series tells the stories of four creatures who are normally known as “bad guys” that are on a mission to be the best heroes around. Each book in the series deals with a different rescue mission that always brings adventure and big laughs. On March 27, 2018, book 6 titled The Bad Guys in Alien vs Bad Guys will take on a creature with too many teeth! Just in time for Spring Break!
