Build a Better Teacher This School Year

By Brian Smith
Grades PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12

The new school year is here! Teachers everywhere are busy writing lesson plans, organizing their classroom libraries, labeling everything in sight, and arranging the furniture in their welcoming environments. All teachers, whether they are first year newbies or seasoned vets, are readying themselves to teach the new crop of kids that will walk through their door — kids who are ready for a great year!

As I start my 15th year in education, I feel very blessed to have been selected to give a TEDx Hickory talk. TEDx talks are part of independently organized TED events. TED talks are less than 18 minutes long and were originally designed to be about Technology, Entertainment, or Design (hence the acronym TED). Today however, there are thousands and thousands of talks given on all kinds of subjects. My TEDx talk, Building a Better Teacher, recently became available to view online, and I wanted to share it with you this week.

This talk is about my journey into education and how my students throughout the years have created the teacher that I am today. In that vein, I challenge each teacher to conscientiously let their students build them into a better teacher this year.

Giving a TEDx talk was on my professional bucket list (a list of things I want to do before I retire). I can’t believe that I got to mark it off as completed!

I hope you enjoy my story and can relate to how my path towards being a better teacher was paved by my students.

Connect with me, dad2ella, on Twitter and Pinterest.

I can’t wait to see you next time.
