Vicky Alvear Shecter is the author of two historical fiction novels for young adults. Both are set in the ancient world: Curses and Smoke: A Novel of Pompeii and Cleopatra's Moon. She also writes about mythology for middle-grade readers. Those titles include Anubis Speaks! A Guide to the Afterworld by the Egyptian God of the Dead and Hades Speaks! A Guide to the Underworld by the Greek God of the Dead. In 2015, Thor Speaks! will be released. Both her children's biographies, Cleopatra Rules! and Alexander the Great Rocks the World, were named to the VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates) Honor List for nonfiction.
Vicky's appeal in the classroom is not just limited to language arts and writing classes. World history and Latin teachers also benefit from her programs about researching and writing nonfiction and historical fiction. She regularly speaks to local, regional, and national conventions for Latin students about the ancient world. Vicky is a docent at the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Antiquities at Emory University. She also writes for the Huffington Post, making connections between the ancient world and modern habits. Vicky is happy to tailor her presentations to what students are learning in the classroom.
