Mahtab, in Persian, means Moonlight. Mahtab Narsimhan was born in Mumbai, India, and immigrated to Canada in 1997. Her debut novel, The Third Eye (Dundurn, 2007), the first of the Tara Trilogy, won the Silver Birch Fiction Award in 2009. This award is part of the Forest of Reading program celebrated across the province of Ontario where students select the winner.
The Tiffin (DCB, 2011), a middle-grade novel based on the dabbawallas of Mumbai, received critical acclaim, was shortlisted for many awards, and was named one of the five best books for Young People in 2011 by the Quill & Quire. It has been published in the U.K., China, and Taiwan. It was also nominated for the MYRCA (Manitoba Young Readers' Choice Award), SYRCA (Satkatchewan Young Readers' Choice Award), and Red Maple (Forest of Reading Program) awards.
Mahtab"s most recent novel, Mission Mumbai, was released in March of 2016 and has already received excellent reviews.
Mahtab is one of the four Writers in Residence (2015-2016) at the Toronto District School Board for the second year running. She lives in Toronto with her husband, son, and Golden Retriever. She is deeply committed to representing diversity in her stories.
