Charles Dickens was a popular Victorian novelist born in Portsea, England on Feb. 7, 1812. He is now regarded as one of the greatest English writers of all time, and his works include A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Hard Times, Oliver Twist, and more. Dickens was a master storyteller whose works are laced with wit and social satire. The enduring power of his writing is evident in the fact that his works are still widely read, taught, and performed in modern dramatizations. He died on June 9, 1870 at the age of 58.
