Description of the Author’s Presentation

The Editing and Publishing Process

Wendy will take students through the many steps from original draft to published book, including: character development, "big idea" edits, sentence and paragraph-level improvements, copyediting, and advanced reader copies. Students will come away with the message that writers improve by becoming better re-writers.

Sources of Inspiration

What parts of Wendy's books are true or inspired by real life, and what parts are complete fiction? Wendy will talk about how to find inspiration, reveal the family stories that spurred her work, and discuss how history can intersect in unexpected ways with our family histories. She will also show students how having a specific, defined inspiration can help writers develop more material and ideas.
