Grades

3–5, 6–8

Scott has been a computer educator for nearly fifteen years, teaching all grade levels in after-school and electronic art programs, adult seminars, and senior citizen classes. Scott’s interactive transmedia adventures for the classroom specialize in teaching the sorts of skills required for the new Common Core curriculum, including problem solving, critical thinking, and leadership. He helps enable kids to effectively teach themselves the targeted skills in much the same way that they teach themselves to improve their videogame skills: by getting through the story. Scott lives in Santa Monica, Calif., and can be visited on his website at scottbly.com.

Description of the Author’s Presentation

Artificial Intelligence Attack

Grades 4-8
45-90 minutes

When Scott comes to visit the school, presumably for a standard Q&A session with an author, an unexpected computer adventure ensues. As Scott begins his presentation, a mysterious video displays, revealing that Scott has stumbled upon an unexpected plot, making him a target! Now the school is a target as well! As the mysterious threat is explored, a web of deceit and misdirection leads the students down a trail where they learn about online safety, internet search skills, and code breaking. By the end, they will have discovered a dastardly plot and thwarted a rogue artificial intelligence.

Virtual Visits

Scott can do 30-minute virtual visits for Q&A with book groups, library groups, and classrooms. He would love to discuss writing, technology, media, and creative arts with any age range.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

Scott will require a projector and adequate audio amplification. In Southern California, Scott can bring his own AV setup, which includes a powerful PA system and computer and projector setup. For locations outside of Southern California, other arrangements must be made.

Honorarium

Rates begin at $500 for a Southern California visit. For more information about other locations, please submit an Author Visit Request form. The Author Visits Manager will respond shortly.
