Description of the Author’s Presentation

You Can Be An Author Too!

Grades K-2
30 minutes

For younger grades, Michael shares one of his picture books: The Monster Alphabet or Baseball From A to Z. He takes the students through the book page by page and talks about writing and how ideas make it from the brain to the page. The Monster Alphabet is particularly good for this age group in light of Common Core Standards and the requirements in the reading standards for legends and myths.

Dreams: Or How My Dream of Writing Found Me

Grade 3 and up
40 minutes (leaves time for Q&A in a sixty-minute class schedule)

One of the most common questions Michael is asked “Did you always want to be a writer?”

Michael says, “No, I wanted to be a basketball star and a rock star and a movie star and all the other things kids dream of being. But then I discovered books and reading changed my life. Being a reader led me to being a writer, which is my dream job. So my dream of writing ‘found me’. I talk about how important it is to dream about being or doing something. Even if you don’t become a basketball or rock star, dreams move you forward and take you places and usually you end up where you need to be. The presentation also talks about writing, revision, research and all the things that go into creating a book that kids aren’t aware of. And if there is time left after questions (or during) occasionally there are magic tricks.”

Conference and Festival Appearances

Getting Middle Grade Boys Onboard The Reading Train!

45-50 minutes (with time for Q&A after)

Michael says, “I was a reluctant reader. The Classics Illustrated Robin Hood changed my life. Now I write high interest ‘boy books.’ (Girls like them too!) How do we get boys hooked on reading? And specifically, with Common Core Standards, how do my books and their subject matter help teachers and students satisfy the needs of CCS while enjoying an entertaining story?”

Virtual Visits

Michael is happy to do virtual visits with classes or schools via Skype. He prefers that students have read one of his books and that the visit be a question and answer session, but he is flexible and always willing to work with creative teachers and librarians on topics for virtual visits.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

A projector and screen is needed. Michael will always travel with my laptop as backup, but he prefers to use the school’s equipment with his presentation on a flash drive. Microphone needs depend on the event space and size of the audience. He doesn’t usually have trouble being heard, but in auditoriums or large libraries, a microphone is usually a good idea.

Honorarium

The daily honorarium is $1,500 for up to four presentations per day. Travel expenses as required. Michael requests mileage reimbursement for in-state visits more than 100 miles round trip.
