Michael Garland is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of thirty-four picture books and illustrator of another forty books for other authors. His books have won the California and Delaware State Reading Awards and honors from the Society of Illustrators in New York. Recent book have made the Kirkus Top Twenty Picture Books of the Year, Bank Street College Best Books of the Year and Pennsylvania Baker’s Dozen Best Books for Family Literacy List.

How I Make a Book

Grades PreK-8
45-60 minutes

Michael Garland’s presentation consists of a PowerPoint show about his work, as well as hands-on demos. Michael will show students how he constructs a book, including the story concept and story development. Using his own book dummies, comprised of sketches and text, he demonstrates how a book is designed. In the PowerPoint presentation, he shows step-by-step how he makes an illustration while deconstructing one of his own. He does a quick drawing demo and then he reads from one of his books. He takes questions throughout.


Conference and Festival Appearances

30-50 minutes

Michael Garland is frequently asked to give presentations at reading festivals, teacher, librarian and literacy conferences throughout the country.

The program describes how Michael Garland writes and illustrates his books, from the initial inspirational idea to the printed book. He will discuss the marriage of picture and text, reading levels, and how his books provide a gateway to literacy for young readers.

The presentation requires a digital projector connected to a computer that runs PowerPoint.
