Conference and Festival Appearances

The Danger of a Single Story
60 minutes (includes time for Q&A)

It is dangerous to have a narrow perspective of a people or culture, to know only a single story about them. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has given an excellent TED talk about the Danger of a Single Story. From a writer's perspective, Mahtab Narsimhan explains why it is important for children from world cultures to be represented in the stories they read and to hear stories of cultures other than their own. This is necessarily for nurturing a future generation which is tolerant, inclusive, and kind.

The Immigrant Experience and Learning How to Fit In
60 minutes (includes time for Q&A)

Mahtab immigrated to Canada in 1997 and went through a few hard years trying to fit in. She enjoys sharing her experiences with those who may be facing similar struggles so that they know they're not alone. She also gives the students some tips on how to cope with being a newcomer, where to seek help, and how to fit into your adopted country.
