Kat Falls lives in Evanston, Illinois with her husband, theater director Robert Falls, their three children and a whole slew of pets. She grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an undergrad and went on to receive an MFA in screenwriting from Northwestern University.

Kat came up with the idea for her debut novel, Dark Life during a writing exercise. Knowing that her 11-year-old son loved reading about the ocean, Wild West pioneers and, of course, the X-Men, she combined his interests and created a story premise that kept her up nights plotting and world-building.

The sequel is Rip Tide. Each book has been designated as A Junior Library Guild Selection.

Kat also wrote a YA sci-fi-adventure trilogy called Inhuman.

Description of the Author’s Presentation

During her talk, Kat tries to get kids, especially reluctant readers, excited about books and writing. She discusses how she comes up with story ideas; how her background in screenwriting has helped her in writing for kids; and how much research goes into a science fiction novel. She also shares "behind the scenes" stories about her journey to publication.

Throughout the presentation, Kat shows projected images from her research that inspired and informed the Dark Life series, including deep-sea creatures, future technology, and cutting edge science (such as photos of glow-in-the-dark puppies.) These images always generate lots of questions from the students and keep the program lively and interactive. Afterwards, Kat is available for book signing and conversation.

Kat is comfortable speaking to groups of any size and she is willing to create a specific program to suit the needs of a conference, group, or school. Her presentations are generally 45 minutes to an hour long, but can be tailored to fit the time available.

Conference and Festival Appearances

Kat enjoys being on panels with other authors as well as giving solo presentations. She is also comfortable leading a workshop or breakout session on craft.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

Kat has her PowerPoint presentation on a flash drive, and therefore will need a computer attached to a projector and a screen. She also hopes for a good microphone if she’s speaking to a large group.
