Jordan Sonnenblick must be a little nuts. He has taught middle school English for over a decade, and still loves talking with kids. Mr. Sonnenblick's engaging author visits start with one or two large-group assemblies, where he discusses the students' life dreams and goals, along with a plan for achieving them; the writing process; why students should pay attention in English class (and math!); the stories behind his books; and everything he has learned about how to become a happy grown-up — plus helpful tips on what to do if you are ever attacked by a maniacal toddler swinging a toy Army tank.
In the afternoon, Mr. Sonnenblick likes to conduct small-group writing workshops in which he shows the participants how to analyze the writing styles of their favorite authors, and then use those authors' style tricks to write about their own life experiences — which is way funner than it sounds, especially if there are snacks provided.
Mr. Sonnenblick's big goal for a visit day is to make the students and staff feel more inspired and alive at 3 PM than they were at 8 AM.
Please feel free to check out Mr. Sonnenblick's website, creatively titled www.jordansonnenblick.com, if you would like to learn more about his life and work.
