Jessica Young Author Visit Kit

Birthday
September 13, 1975

Grades

PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5

Award-winning author Jessica Young grew up in Canada, but these days she calls Tennessee home. The same things make her happy now as when she was a kid: dancing, painting, music, digging in the dirt, picnics, reading, and writing. She also loves sharing her passion for writing and creativity with kids. Jessica was a teacher for twenty years, and she loves working with teachers and library media specialists to tailor presentations to best suit student needs. Find more information about school visits on the Teachers and Kids page of her website: www.jessicayoungbooks.com.

Jessica’s award-winning debut picture book My Blue is Happy is a 2014 Charlotte Zolotow Highly Commended Title and 2016-2017 Volunteer State Book Award nominee. It was included on the 2014 Bank Street College of Education Best Books of the Year for Children and Young Adults, the Texas Library Association’s 2014 2×2 Reading List, the Ontario Library Association’s Best Bets 2013 and 2015 Forest of Reading Blue Spruce list, and the Library of Congress/Center for the Book’s 52 Great Reads list. Jessica is also the author of Spy Guy the Not-So-Secret Agent, the Finley Flowers chapter book series and the early chapter book series Haggis and Tank Unleashed.

Description of the Author’s Presentation

Interactive presentations get students actively involved in volunteering, playing games, and practicing skills.

Topics include: author background, the roles of author and illustrator, using wordplay in stories, individuality and cultivating a unique voice, “story gardening,” the writing and publishing process, the importance of perseverance and flexibility, and Q&A. Jessica’s teacher resources include follow-up activities to reinforce student learning.

Presentations are adapted for age/grade levels and are typically 40–50 minutes (preschool presentations are usually 30–40 minutes), with up to four presentations per day.

Up to 200 students per presentation is preferable. Fewer students make a more personal experience although greater numbers can be accommodated.

Hands-on workshops are designed for smaller groups (up to 30 students) and run 40–60 minutes, depending on grade level and activities.

Jessica loves tailoring presentations and workshops to best suit student needs and dovetail with school curricula, including targeted programs on plot and character development, endings, revising, and more.

Sample presentations for Grades K–5:

Story Gardening

Your mind is like a plot of land. When you plant your idea seeds, then water, weed, and wait, you can create your own stories. No one else has a piece of earth like yours. What will you grow there? This presentation covers the writing process from start to finish, including collecting and planting ideas, cultivating a unique voice, using writing tools (literary devices) and story structure, and revising. Jessica’s published books, favorite books, and works-in-progress are used as examples. A Q&A session following the presentation provides an opportunity to further discuss material covered and address questions about the writing and publishing process.

Writing Tools—Fun with Language

Students explore various “writing tools” and examine how they can liven up and lyricize picture books and chapter books. Using her own books as examples, Jessica discusses and leads activities that cover similes and metaphors; alliteration; rhythm and rhyme; onomatopoeia; and homophones. Students learn to identify literary devices and other wordplay to try out in their own writing. A Q&A session following the presentation provides an opportunity to further discuss material covered and address questions about the writing and publishing process.

Conference and Festival Appearances

Jessica loves designing programs for teachers, librarians and children’s book writers and can tailor presentations to groups’ needs.

Writing Picture Books and Early Chapter Books

Using her own books and some of her favorite books as examples, Jessica will highlight what makes the formats of picture books and chapter books unique and exciting. Participants will explore some of the joys and challenges of writing for young readers.

Virtual Visits

Jessica is happy to drop in for a 20-minute virtual visit and Q&A using Skype or iChat with book groups and library groups that have read at least one of her books.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

Microphone (for large groups), cart/table for author’s laptop, projector with connection cables for laptop, screen, extension cord.
