Artist Dylan Metrano is available to give paper-cutting demonstrations and read from Every Day Birds. He can give a presentation on the history of paper-cutting, and show examples of different techniques and styles from around the world. He can work with students of all different ages to create their own simple paper-cut pieces.

Dylan lives on Monhegan Island, ten miles off the coast of Maine. His artwork can be seen at www.dylanmetrano.com.

Description of the Author’s Presentation

Paper-Cutting

Grades K-12
Presentation length is flexible, from 20 minutes to two hours.

Dylan can read from Every Day Birds, or use the book to explain how his paper-cut artwork was created. He’ll give some background on the history of paper-cutting in different cultures throughout history, and show examples of the work of a variety of contemporary paper-cutting artists. He then can show the step-by-step process of creating a piece of art, and work with students to create their own pieces.

Paper-Cutting Today and Throughout History

Artist Dylan Metrano gives a presentation on the history of paper-cutting in different cultures throughout history, and shows examples of the work of a variety of contemporary paper-cutting artists. He explains through slides showing each step in the creation of an original work of art. He’s then able to answer any questions about the paper-cutting process.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

Dylan will bring a laptop computer with the PowerPoint presentation on it. Small groups can view it on the computer, though larger groups will require a projector. If Dylan is to work with students in creating their own paper-cutting artwork, then the school should provide cutting tools (X-Acto knives or scissors, depending on the age group), cutting mats, pencils, glue sticks, and colored paper.

Dylan will also bring with him a selection of books for students to look through.

Honorarium

Dylan’s honorarium fee is flexible but typically falls within $500-$1,000 per day, plus any and all travel expenses. Dylan lives in Maine but loves traveling and would is happy to visit schools and libraries throughout the country.
