Donna Cooner was born and raised in Texas before moving to beautiful Fort Collins, Colorado. She is a former teacher and school administrator, who now directs the teacher preparation program at Colorado State University. Donna’s debut novel, Skinny, is a YALSA Teen’s Top Ten Nominee and a Bank Street’s Best Children’s Book of the Year. 

During her presentation, Donna talks about her personal struggles with obesity and self acceptance. She also discusses her writing process, from rough draft to finished book. Donna also focuses on the importance of character development and revision. An experienced educator, she is also available to present at educational conferences and lead writing workshops for smaller groups.

Description of the Author’s Presentation

An Author’s World  

Grades 6-12
30-60 minutes

Donna begins her presentation by discussing the perception of authors vs. the reality of the writing process. She goes through her process of expanding the real details of her life into a fictional story. Donna’s inspirational talk also includes thoughts on developing a positive self-image in the face of bullying. She stresses the importance of overcoming the self-critical voices that keep writers and students from succeeding. Donna enjoys participation from the students and always leaves time at the end for Q&As.

Publishing a Young Adult Novel:  From Idea to Publication

30-45 minutes

Using her debut novel Skinny as an example, Donna discusses the path to publication. She shares insights on how to polish a manuscript, query an agent, and market a publication after sale. She leaves time at the end for a Q&A to individualize content for specific audience needs.

The Voices Behind Skinny

30-45 minutes

In this powerful presentation, Donna discusses the challenges of obesity and self-image in the world of social media. Using examples from personal emails, tweets, and messages, she shares real reader feedback about her book, Skinny. Donna ends with suggestions and teaching tips.

Virtual Visits

Donna is happy to drop in for a 20-minute virtual visit and Q&A using Skype or iChat with book groups and library groups that have read her book.
