Allan Woodrow loves school and library visits because (he claims) he was once a child himself, and often loiters in libraries. He is the author of the humorous middle-grade novels Class Dismissed, The Pet War and The Rotten Adventures of Zachary Ruthless. He is also the author of The Contagious Colors of Mumpley Middle School and The Amazing Wilmer Dooley, written under the pen name, Fowler DeWitt.

Both Allan and Fowler offer presentations that combine humor and inspiration.

Description of the Author’s Presentation

How to become a great righter wrighter writer.
Allan’s most popular school presentation focuses on his love of writing from an early age, starting with the first book he ever wrote (when he was eight years old… a miserable attempt at writing, bringing hope to kids everywhere), and how he eventually overcame his self doubts to believe in himself and follow his dream to become a writer. Allan also discusses the importance of revision and how to improve one’s writing.

A day-long school visit consists of up to three 45-minute presentations and lunch with a small group of students.

Workshops

Allan offers workshops based on his books Class Dismissed or The Pet War. His Class Dismissed workshop focuses on the importance of narrative point-of-view, while his workshop based on The Pet War focuses on persuasive writing tactics.

Conference and Festival Appearances

Allan is available for panels, readings, signings and more. Contact Allan for rates.

Virtual Visits

Allan is always happy to visit a classroom or book group via Skype, but requests a trial run prior to the virtual visit to ensure everything is running smoothly. Allan’s Skype visits are a free 15-minute Q&A, assuming at least one of his books has been read, and/or pre-sales made available. He is also available for (up to) 35-minute visits, which include Q&A, for $300.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

Allan brings his own Mac laptop computer and adapter, but will need a projector to plug into, along with basic cables and a screen. Speakers are helpful, as a small part of his presentation uses audio. He also hopes for a good microphone (depending on room size) and a glass of water.

Honorarium

$1,100 per day, plus expenses (up to three 45-minute presentations).

Ordering Books

Schools and libraries may order books at a discounted rate by visiting The Scholastic Teacher Store or by calling 1-800-SCHOLASTIC.
