Make 'Em Laugh

"Send kids off for the holidays with some winter-themed jokes. First, project one of the jokes from the printable, covering the punch line. After reading the joke aloud, explain what type of joke it is (wordplay, science-based, etc.) and invite kids to guess the punch line. Do the same with each joke, then give students a copy of the printable and construction paper to make books to bring home. As they cut and paste jokes into their books, have students underline new vocabulary words and identify the type of joke or the kind of wordplay involved. For upper grades, make your jokes more challenging by substituting higher-order words.”
—Kevin Gallagher, kindergarten teacher, Bryant Elementary School, Seattle
