Teaching Tip: Word Play Is Fun!
In order for learning to “stick,” students must be motivated to participate and encouraged to continue practicing. There are many games you can play to practice spelling and vocabulary words, like “Hangman,” “Word Wall Wheel of Fortune,” or “Wordo.” One of the best activities I have found that occupies students for hours is magnetic poetry. While my students do not always have time to create an entire poem, each is encouraged to use the vocabulary from the high school edition of magnetic poetry to construct sentences (using SAT vocabulary, no less!) with creativity. For what other purpose could I use the side of a filing cabinet, the perfect canvas for such an authentic activity?
