An increasing number of schools across the country are now monitoring kids’ weights and sending them home with “health report cards.” Supporters say this is a helpful response to concerns about kids being overweight. Others say that these reports are bad for kids’ self-esteem. What do you think?

Are health report cards a good idea?

It might be good for kids if their parents know that they may be unhealthy. Then maybe the parents will pay closer attention to what their kids are eating and help them to do a little bit more exercise.

Some kids might feel very embarrassed and other kids might tease them if they are told they are overweight. Also, kids might feel pressured to stop eating if they think that they are overweight, and that wouldn’t be good for their health.
