I’m Evan Bryant, and I want to tell you about the summer of 1914, when I was eleven years old, and my grandfather came back from the dead.

I was so excited! I just knew he’d tell wonderful stories about all the places he’d sailed and the adventures he’d had. And since he’d been a ship’s carpenter, he could help me and Buddy, my best friend, build a rowboat and take us fishing.

I knew we would have a great time, and we did, until the police detective knocked on our front door. You see, Grandpa had not told us all of his stories. He had a terrible secret that he was afraid to tell, afraid that if my parents knew what he’d done, they’d send him away and never see him again. But when the detective started asking questions about his past, Grandpa had no choice but to tell the truth, the whole truth.
