The Journal of Augustus Pelletier: The Lewis and Clark Expedition Booktalk
There were no two ways about it, no matter what anyone said, I was going on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They needed me, even if they didn’t know it.
No, even if the captains say I’m too young, I know they’ll want me sooner or later. I’ll just follow along, keeping outta sight till they do. I’m half-French, half-Omaha, and I can track anything.
I wait till we’ve gone a good 200 miles before I decide to quit being a shadow and show myself to Captain Lewis. I’m pretty convincing about him needing me, and he lets me stay. So now I’m a real member of the Corps, and get to enjoy the fire and the dinner and the conversation with the rest of them. What an adventure this trip is going to be, as we search for an all-water route to the Pacific!
