Each type or genre of book provides a specific opportunity for you to help children learn about literacy. Consider including the following types of books in your classroom library:
Traditional: Familiar books like fables, folktales, myths, and legends
Fantasy: Imaginative stories that contain interesting characters
Information: Books that provide realistic, accurate, and authentic information
Poetry and rhyme: Collections of poems and books with silly rhymes and rhythms
Predictable: Cumulative tales, such as "The House that Jack Built" and books with repetitive refrains, like "Green Eggs and Ham"
Alphabet: Books that often link the letter name and its sound
