Discover how human activities impact sea turtles in Costa Rica and dolphins in New Zealand.

3–5, 6–8, 9–12

Activity Type

  • Activities and Games

In the Ocean Life activity from Scholastic Explorers and the Earthwatch Institute, students will join Earthwatch research teams in Costa Rica and New Zealand to learn about ocean life and the effects of human activities on leatherback turtles and dusky dolphins.

In Costa Rica, students will study leatherback sea turtles, the oldest-living reptile. Scientists and Earthwatch teams are monitoring the nesting turtle populations to protect them.

In New Zealand, students will learn about the acrobatic dusky dolphins. These ocean mammals attract increasing numbers of tourists, but are tourist boats and swim-with-dolphin programs hurting the dolphins?
