Who can participate?
All illustrations must be drawn by a child who is between the ages of seven (7) and twelve (12) at time of entry and must be submitted by that child’s parent or guardian.
If I post my child’s artwork via social media using #TheIckabog, will it automatically be entered into the competition?
No, you must fill out the entry form and upload your child’s submission at www.scholastic.com/illustrationcompetition.
Will J.K. Rowling be reviewing or judging my child’s artwork?
No, J.K. Rowling will not be reviewing or judging artwork submitted for this contest.
I don’t have a scanner. How do I submit my child’s artwork?
We also accept digital photos of hand-drawn or hand-painted artwork! If you have the equipment available, please use a DSR camera and/or a tripod. However, if you do not have a camera available, you can use your smartphone. Take the photo in good lighting, but do not use a flash. Make sure to take the photo straight on, so that the angles are not skewed, and crop the photo so that there is no background.
I’m not a resident of the US or Canada. Can I still enter the contest?
Scholastic is only able to accept entries from legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and Canada (excluding Quebec). For residents of other countries, please check www.theickabog.com/competition for information about a contest in your country.
How often can I enter?
Parents and guardians can submit one entry per child per installment of the story. More than one parent/guardian cannot enter a submission for the same installment for the same child.
How can I check the status of my submission?
We will notify the parents of the winning artists by email or phone on or about August 3, 2020.
Will I be notified if I do not win?
Due to the high volume of submissions, we are only able to notify the winners. To find out who won, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope by September 30, 2020 to:
The Ickabog Illustration Competition Winners List, Scholastic Inc., 557 Broadway, New York, NY 10012.
What happens to my child’s artwork if we win?
If you win… CONGRATULATIONS! Your child’s artwork will be included in the book by J.K. Rowling to be published by Scholastic in November 2020. To help make that happen, you’ll have to send the original of your child’s artwork to Scholastic. We need the original for production purposes to ensure the quality of the published book. As explained in the rules, you’ll also have to sign an agreement assigning all rights in your child’s artwork to Scholastic and J.K. Rowling.
When do submissions close?
The contest submission period ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on July 17, 2020.
