Flat Cat

By Tara Lazar, illustrated by Pete Oswald

BEFORE READING

Sometimes the way we look changes, and we aren’t sure how we feel about it. In this book you’ll meet Flat Cat, who, one day, isn’t so flat! Together, look at the cover. Then, invite your child to talk about a time when the way they looked changed (maybe a new haircut or style, or a pair of glasses, or growing taller).

WHILE READING

Read through the book once without pausing. Then, go back to the beginning and reread, stopping to invite your child to respond to the following questions:

After “...right in the wash”: How does Flat Cat end up in the wash?

After “Flat Cat was flattening!”: How does Flat Cat feel about being fluffy? What causes him to get flat again?

After “Smooth moves, Flat Cat!”: Why does Flat Cat like being flat? Why does he like being fluffy?

AFTER READING

Flat Cat discovers that there are good things about being flat and being fluffy! Invite your child to think again about the time the way they looked changed. Ask them to say what was good about the new look, and then to say what was good about the old look.

Literacy Tip

Go back through the book, find the silliest words you can (we’re looking at you, splish-splosh), and help your child make up their own silly words for things.

CELEBRATE

Take turns describing what you would look like if you were flat. Or puffy, fluffy, furry, or fuzzy-wuzzy. It’s fun to be silly together!
