TEDxTeen comes to Scholastic!

Mar 21, 2013
This past weekend, here at the Scholastic headquarters in New York, I got to witness something awesome. For the second year in a row, our offices hosted TEDxTeen’s annual conference. If you’re not familiar with TED, it’s a non-profit organization committed to spreading intellectual ideas. TEDx presentations are self- organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDxTeen brings kids and teens from all over the world together to discuss how they’re changing their communities and to inspire others to take action. Even cooler, ‘this is teen’ was one of the sponsors. To celebrate the day, we invited four of our YA authors to have breakfast with TedXTeen attendees, and sign copies of their books. Elizabeth Eulberg signed copies of Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality, while Eliot Schrefer talked with readers about Endangered. Alaya Dawn Johnson signed her debut novel The Summer Prince and Andrew Jenks, who also served as TedXTeen’s online host, got to tell fans what it was like to write his autobiography, Andrew Jenks: My Adventure of a Young Filmmaker at the age of 27. After breakfast, TEDXTeen host Chelsea Clinton, kicked-off the day. You can view the entire TEDxTeen event at www.tedxteen.com, but I also have a great behind-the-scenes look at the day in the slideshow below.   Photo 1: Jenks signed a copy of Andrew Jenks: My Adventures as a Young Filmmaker for TEDxTeen speaker, Caine Monroy, the creator of Caine’s arcade. Photo 2: Andrew Jenks hung out with Scottish singing sensation Tallia Storm, whose first gig was opening Elton John’s concert in Scotland at the age of 13. Photo 3: TedxTeen participants Kelvin Doe aka DJ Focus, Tallia Storm, Ndaba Mandela, Maria Toorpakai Wazir and Caine Monroy took a group photo before heading to the Scholastic auditorium to present. Photo 6: From coast to coast and from host to host. Andrew Jenks’ first duty as online host was to interview TEDxTeen host Chelsea Clinton Photo 7: In addition to the speakers, Andrew also got talk to some of the amazing TEDxTeen sponsors including Editor in Chief of Seventeen Magazine Ann Shoket, who told viewers about Seventeen’s contest to put a reader on the cover of the magazine. Photo 8: TEDxTeen has gone to the birds! During her presentation about the importance of surprise, Tania Luna surprised the audience with the chicken dance. Her sidekicks accompanied her to her online interview. Photo 9: Scholastic Authors Elizabeth Eulberg (Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality) and Alaya Dawn Johnson (The Summer Prince) had a chance to talk about ‘this is teen.’ From saving the environment, to creating healthy candy, the speakers at TEDxTeen had tons of creative ways to contribute to their communities. Do you know kids that are making changes in the world around them? Let us know what they’re doing in the comments.
