Well, the Scholastic Summer Challenge is a program put in place to prevent that from happening. In case you’re new to the program this year, here’s a bit about it: Now in its 7th year, the Scholastic Summer Challengeis a free reading program dedicated to stopping the “Summer Slide” and encouraging kids to read more books this summer. This year, kids are reading to famous historical and natural landmarks around the world, like the Taj Mahal, Mount Everest, The Eiffel Tower, and more!Kids log the minutes they spend reading as they Read for the World Record, enter sweepstakes to win fabulous prizes, and earn digital rewards when they complete weekly reading challenges.Once you’ve registered your class, you’ll be able to track their reading progress all summer long. Students can officially start logging minutes on May 6, 2013. Also new this year, the school with the most minutes read will win a school visit from Dav Pilkey, author of the popular Captain Underpants series! Plus, we have a FREE content calendar for teachers on Facebook—check it out! Each day reveals a new resource—from videos to articles to giveaways—all around the topic of summer reading.
