My month of letters comes to an end

Mar 01, 2013
A few weeks ago, I wrote about joining the Month of Letters Challenge. And I’m happy to say…I DID IT! I wrote a letter every day (except Sundays) in February. It was a more difficult project than I anticipated. I thought it would be a great way to reconnect with college friends I hadn’t spoken to in a while. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any of their mailing addresses, so I had to email or send them a Facebook message first! I pulled out my old stationery and sealing wax kit and wrote letters. I sent books I thought my friends would enjoy with the note written on the inside cover; I sent letters and cards for birthdays instead of texting or emailing, as I usually would do; I even made Valentine’s day cards with fellow OOMers and sent those. It was more fun than I thought it would be! I only received one letter back – most friends responded by emailing, Facebook messaging, texting, or calling me. I learned that one friend moved to Shanghai and another to Ghana! I felt so out of touch with their lives! But I achieved my goal. I wrote every day and learned what everyone has been up to. A few people were so excited by the project, they wanted to try it in March! So maybe I’ll receive a letter after all! There is something special about writing letters; it feels more personal. Unlike an email, I don’t get to edit and rewrite my letter, so I have to really think about what I want to say before I wrote it down. March 1st to March 7th is “National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week,” so I think I’ll end my month long letter project with a card thanking someone in my life. After that, I might continue to write letters. Not every day, maybe just once a week. Did you write any letters this month? Remember, it doesn’t have to be February to send a letter!
