My Awesome and Affectionate Valentines

I’ve spoken at length about my adoration of Calef Brown, and a package arrived with… get this… a Calef Brown Valentine’s Day book. My Valentine’s Day is complete before it even begins! We Go Together: A Curious Selection of Affectionate Verse is a smaller form factor than his other books, making it that much more of a sweet little giftie. Don’t let its small size fool you, though. It’s still packed with 18 poems, each paired with a weirdly gorgeous illustration. The poems are about love and friendship, not in an overly sweet or sentimental way, but funny and strange and great for all ages. My two favorites are “Laughers” (sample: “I cackle and you chortle. Together we chorkle.”) and”Scrootin’ Eyes”: Sometimes I catch you giving me the “scrootin’ eyes. Your eyes go wide like two pies, then slowly narrow. You’re a cat. I’m a sparrow. But then you crack a smile and your nose wiggles, quickly followed by one ofthosegiggles. The ones that show your dimple-wrinkles. Then my heart twinkles. Love. It. The next Valentine that took me surprise is the latest from Dallas Clayton, who took the Interwebs by storm when he releasedAn Awesome Book. It’s appropriately calledAn Awesome Book of Love! and is another Valentine great to give a loved one of any age. It begins, “If I was a dinosaur and you were a jet there’s a chance, a good chance, that we’d never have met.” From there it goes on to just make you feel lucky have love for all the loved ones in your life, and describes the awesome ways love feels. Give some love and smooches and awesome books to your loved ones this Valentine’s Day. <3
