Happy birthday, Clifford! This week is a very BIG week at Scholastic. No, not just because it’s Valentine’s Day – but because it’s also Clifford’s birthday! And it’s a really BIG one! Fifty years ago this month, Scholastic published the original Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell, and we celebrate the lovable pup’s birthday on Valentine’s Day. In schools and at home, Clifford fans young and old (and readers like you!) have embraced our beloved dog (you could call him Scholastic’s unofficial mascot) with unprecedented enthusiasm. So it’s fitting today that we take a moment to update you on all the ways you can join the celebration this month! For starters, February 14 isn’t just Clifford’s birthday. It also marks the kick-off of the 5th annual Clifford BE BIG IN YOUR COMMUNITY Contest – a key initiative of the ongoing BE BIG campaign, which invites everyone, big and little, to take action and raise awareness for how Clifford’s BIG Ideas can make the world a better place. Being BIG is all about being big-hearted, and the contest asks folks who have BIG ideas about how to impact their communities to be inspired by Clifford to do so. Check back on Thursday when the contest officially opens to share your BIG idea! This month will also see some great new releases for your littlest Clifford fan – including Clifford’s Birthday Party. Or if ebooks are your thing, there are dozens of Clifford titles available through Storia, our free ereading platform! There is also a new DVD out called Celebrate With Clifford! In seven party-packed Clifford tales, Clifford and his pals discover that always following your heart and being yourself is the best way to be a BIG friend. There’s more! If apps are more your little one’s style, we have plenty to choose from. Clifford’s BIG Birthday App was released on iOS back in September – and new for this month it’s available on Google Play as well! Android users can help Emily Elizabeth plan a surprise party for Clifford. The app features three highly replayable games, and the app engages kids with fun birthday activities while reinforcing early literacy skills. And new in LeapFrog’s App Center is Clifford’s Rhyme Race. Each level completed brings fun mazes all over town to learn about rhyming words and developing logic skills. But what’s more fun than wishing Clifford well yourself? We’re currently in the middle of a massive birthday card campaign – and if you haven’t sent Clifford a card yet, now is the time to do so! Kids can create and decorate a card while grown-ups can create their very own ‘Big Red Ears’ personalized photos and share them through social media. The first-ever Clifford title! Speaking of social – we want to hear from you! Join the conversation on Clifford’s Official Facebook page, where you can view the galleries of all the entries we received for ‘Clifford’s BIG Cake Contest’ and ‘Clifford’s BIG T-Shirt Contest’. And be sure to play ‘Clifford’s BIG Red Word Scramble;’ you will be addicted to beating the your highest score. So, get involved this week if you’re so moved to honor our beloved dog. Tweet using #clifford! Or read a Clifford book to a child in your life! Or maybe start following @cliffordthebigreddog on Instagram. And be sure to check back on Friday where we will tell you all about all the terrific birthday parties happening all around the country. We look forward to sharing some BIG news then. In the meantime – THANK YOU for helping Clifford reach this extraordinary milestone!   – Kelly MacLellan, Scholastic Media
