What you need:
- two notepads
- pen or pencil
What to do:
- Begin by having a talk with your child about how often he uses math in daily life. Challenge him to estimate how many times in a day he uses math (outside of math class!).
- Give your child a notepad and keep one for yourself. Invite him to make a note every time he uses math during the course of a day. Tell him that you'll do the same yourself. Brainstorm together about what activities to mark down — don't forget to include tasks such as measuring, weighing, and telling time!
- At the end of the day, count up how many times you and your child used math. How accurate was his estimate? Did the results surprise him?
- As an additional challenge, ask your child to come up with ways of doing the same activities that would not require math.
