Teaching reading strategies to your students is simple with Core Clicks. Designed for grades K–5, this digital nonfiction reading program guides students and educators through multiple reads of short informational texts to develop the comprehension strategies students will need for PARCC, Smarter Balanced, and other higher level assessments.

Teaching Reading With High-Quality Texts

Core Clicks is divided into 108 Text Studies (18 per grade). Each Text
Study focuses on one specific reading comprehension strategy from the
list above.

At the center of each Text Study is a short, engaging informational text
co-written by child literacy experts and the editors of Scholastic News®
and Weekly Reader®.

Interactive features embedded in the text guide educators and students
through "three reads" of the text, delving deeper with each encounter.
These features include include text-marking activites, vocabulary support,
discussion questions, and other text-dependent exercises to develop
critical comprehension strategies from the Common Core Standards.

The Three-Read System for
Nonfiction Instruction

The First Read–Read It! (Requires One Class Period)
  • Build engagement right away with a "Before
    You Read" audio clip that sets a purpose for reading
  • Watch a compelling introductory video that
    gets even your most reluctant students excited
    to read the text.
  • Students become familiar with the text which is
    accompanied by contextual vocabulary pop-us
    and an optional audio read-aloud.
The Second Read–Analyze It! (Requires One Class Period)
  • Once your students have a basic understanding
    of the text, they can explore the nonfiction piece
    more closely with text marking and
    text-dependent comprehension questions.
  • Students are challenged to apply the strategies
    and skills they've learned so far.
The Third Read–Discuss It!(Requires One Class Period)
  • Now that your students have a thorough understanding
    of the text, you can take advantage of pop-up discussion
    questions. Each thought-provoking discussion prompt
    fosters critical thinking about the text and challenges
    students to use the strategies they've learned.

Skills Reinforcement and Assessment
Skill Workout

After thoroughly examining the text, teachers focus
on reinforcing the reading strategies with Skill
Workouts. These exercises include videos for direct
instruction and interactive text-based activities.
You can also print out a PDF version of the activity
if you’d like to hand it out top your students for homework.

Question Quests

These light assessments are part of each text study.
Five on-level multiple-choice questions ensure students
grasp the reading comprehension strategies before
applying them to unfamiliar texts. The Question Quests are also
trackable so you can easily assess student performance and

Reading Checkpoint for Test Prep

Here's where students will use the strategies they've
developed in the Text Study on a new and unfamiliar
text. After you've fully covered a Spotlight Skill, students
will use it with a new text and short assessment. These
checkpoints deliver the types of analytical questions
students will encounter on PARCC, Smarter Balanced, and
other higher level assessments. Teachers can track student performance on this feature.

Tracking and Reporting

Both Question Quests and Reading Checkpoints are easily
trackable, so you can assess student progress conveniently
and easily. Both teachers and administrators will be able
to generate useful reports on student, class, and school
levels(COMING SOON: district level reporting). You can
also customize reports by tracking performance by skill,
question type, or over a certain amount of time.
