Main Idea & Key Details
Exciting videos and interactive tasks sustain readers’ interest as they build comprehension skills. Reading Checkpoints give students an opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned to new texts.
Thirteen Spotlight Skills are key skills for reading comprehension tied to Common Core ELA standards. Each Text Study focuses on one Spotlight Skill. Each Spotlight Skill has a grade-appropriate Skill Video for direct instruction and a corresponding Skill Workout.
Twenty Skill Videos (10 for K–2 and 10 for 3–5) provide direct instruction on Common Core correlated Spotlight Skills. One Skill Video is included in each instructional unit. All 20 are accessible in the Skill Video section.
Reading Checkpoints offer periodic, performance-based assessment or skills practice in new texts. Interactive, trackable tasks provide individual practice with the types of questions students will encounter on the PARCC and Smarter Balanced assessments. There are 3 Reading Checkpoints per grade level for K–2, and 6 per grade level for grades 3–5. Reading checkpoints for K–2 are completed with teacher support.
