If you think a school located in rural Tennessee couldn't possibly have state-of-the-art technology, think again.

Technology is behind every aspect of life at Greeneville Middle School. Want to communicate with a teacher? E-mail is the most popular form of communication among colleagues and with parents. Want to stay on top of the school lunch menu? The school's web site has those and other daily announcements, teachers' web pages, and links to a popular education search engine and the Tennessee Electronic Library.

Each Greeneville classroom has five networked computers, a teacher computer station, a large classroom monitor, and VCRs. A state-of-the-art lab has 30 networked computers with Internet access as well as wireless printers. Students also work in the school's diversified tech lab on such real-world applications as computer-aided design (CAD), electronics, biomedical software, alternative energy, and robotics. To be sure that all students at the school have access to technology at home, Greeneville runs a lending program that provides school computers, on a rotating basis, to disadvantaged students.

Greeneville's aim with technology is to create a system-wide program that gives students and staff real-world knowledge of technology through real-life applications. For example, as part of the school's professional development program, teachers can choose from more than 20 different technology-related training sessions. Students work on research-based projects that embed content, information literacy, and technology skills in all curriculum areas.

In the end, students leave Greeneville Middle School ready to meet the challenges of the Twenty-First Century head on.
