Working smarter, not harder, is Kendale Elementary's teamwork philosophy. That's especially true now that the school uses the Florida Sterling Council's criteria for organizational performance excellence. The nonprofit agency helps groups and schools improve organizational and management approaches.
Having realized that Kendale's greatest strength lay in its human resources, school officials embraced the team model and created an action plan to bump student and staff performance up to the next level.
Kendale developed a leadership system composed of various quality-improvement teams. It also gave every employee an opportunity to voice his or her opinion about the process and contribute to improvement initiatives.
The school now focuses on three key performance areas: student achievement, a dedicated and high-performing workforce, and effective operational systems. To help, school leaders carved out special planning time for teachers. Teams of teachers and other staff members regularly monitor progress in the performance areas and check for weaknesses in the school's organizational and management approaches.
Kendale's innovation is clearly making headway: Overall performance has improved in student achievement, attendance, and staff productivity. Plus, the state honored Kendale Elementary last June with the prestigious Governor's Sterling Award for organizational performance excellence. Teamwork and organization, among other areas, equals success for Kendale Elementary.
