At Abraham Lincoln High School, community outreach is all about showing students their potential. Lincoln asks for — and gets — long-term commitments from a wide variety of community organizations and individuals who offer students a vision of what their own futures can hold. For instance, Gear Up, a volunteer program, lets Lincoln High juniors interact with students from San Jose State University. This project includes tutoring, college visits, parent workshops, and academic guidance — all intended to get 80 percent or more of the Lincoln participants to attend four-year colleges. Lincoln's Future Vision Mentoring Program exemplifies the school's philosophy of reaching out to the business community.
Community mentors make a commitment to at-risk kids — meeting regularly with small groups over a four-year period to expose students to the work world. Lincoln's Adopt-A-School partners include the San Jose Repertory Theater and the San Jose Mercury News, among many others.
The school also benefits greatly from parent volunteers. Parents play a vital role in day-to-day school management, helping with everything from working in the Homework Center to grant writing and test administration.
Lincoln High doesn't just take from the community; it gives back. The teenagers work on sundry service projects, from organizing and hosting art shows to tutoring students at neighboring schools. This vigorous effort to give and take has helped improve students' GPAs, their sense of the world, and their place in it as involved citizens. |
