At Stephen Decatur High School, all freshmen are required to take Algebra I as a basic minimum. During the 2003–2004 academic year, 95 percent of ninth graders passed mathematics in the areas of Algebra I, Algebra II, or geometry. All teachers receive intensive professional development in differentiating mathematics instruction during the summer. Special education teachers at the school co-teach with regular classroom teachers, and at least one of the special education teachers is also a certified secondary education mathematics teacher. This support for special-education students has helped Stephen Decatur High School meet annual measured outcomes and achieve adequate yearly progress for all subgroups of students in mathematics.
