Definition Competition

Inspired by the educational objectives of the WordGirl television show, the annual WordGirl Definition Competition engages children in grades 1-3 with vocabulary words in an entertaining and interactive context. In a game-show setting, children put their vocabulary skills to practice as they are asked questions pertaining to word usage, reading comprehension, definitions and using words in different contexts. The Definition Competition consists of three short rounds plus a bonus round.

Each year, the WordGirl Definition Competition marks the official kickoff of the Scholastic Summer Challenge! As the official Ambassador of Summer Reading, WordGirl wants children of all ages to get excited about books and reading because it helps them learn lots of new words! Learn more.

WordGirl is a crime-fighting superhero who uses her vocabulary strength in a never-ending battle for truth, justice and use of the right word! Along with her trusty sidekick, Captain Huggy Face, WordGirl battles and prevails over evil (albeit ridiculous and comical) villains. Only a superhero like WordGirl, endowed with power punches and dictionary strength, can put the word-wrenching scoundrels back in their place proving once again that crime doesn't pay...but knowing the right word for the right moment is priceless.

WordGirl teaches new vocabulary words in a variety of fun and interesting contexts. WordGirl enriches vocabulary, closes the gap for those who don't grow up in language-rich environments, instills a love of language, and fosters better reading comprehension.
