SCHOLASTIC GLOBAL
CLASSPORT PRIVACY POLICY
This Privacy
Policy applies to our online practices only.
Scholastic's
privacy policy
applies to Scholastic Global Classport. In addition, because Scholastic
Global Classport is a classroom activity on Scholastic.com that
requires personally identifiable information, and that may enable
children to disclose personally identifiable information to third
parties, Scholastic obtains prior parental consent through teachers
in order for children under the age of 13 to participate. The operators
of Scholastic Global Classport are Scholastic and ePALS Classroom
Exchange, Inc. Scholastic's address is Scholastic Inc., 557 Broadway,
New York, New York 10012. Scholastic can be reached by phone at
1-800-scholastic and by email at custserv@scholastic.com. If you
have any questions about our privacy policy or practices, please
contact us at this address.
Email
Through Scholastic Global Classport, students who have been registered
by their teacher as part of a classroom can have monitored email
accounts. With monitored email accounts, teachers can preview and
approve every message sent to or from the child before it reaches
its recipient. The teacher who creates a monitored email account
is the only one who has access to and control over the account,
until or unless it gets moved to another individual. The teacher
who is monitoring the account has total discretion over how tightly
to control the account. The default setting is that every message
must be seen by the teacher before it reaches its recipient. However,
the teacher can reduce the level of control or turn filtering off
altogether. Parents are not involved in the monitoring process,
unless the teacher wants to inform the parents.
The teacher
creating the student's email account inputs the first and last name
of the child who will use the account, as well as a password. Scholastic
Global Classport proposes a user name, which is typically some combination
of the user's first name and some letters of the last name or numbers.
The proposed user name will not be the user's actual name. The teacher
can later change the user name at the account registration phase.
To change the user name after that phase, the account would have
to be deleted and a new account created. The first time a child
signs on, the child will be asked to pick a new password to access
the account.
Teachers must
obtain consent on behalf of parents in order to register their students
under the age of 13 in Scholastic Global Classport, as described
below under "Registration". ePALS acts as the administrator of the
student registration and parental consent process.
Registration
Teachers register their students by providing the street address,
city, state and zip code where the classroom is located. For students
who are under 13, teachers must print out this privacy policy, the
Scholastic.com privacy policy and the parental consent form (choose format: Text-only | RTF | PDF), and obtain
written parental consent. Once teachers have verified to us that
they have received written parental consent (by clicking the appropriate
checkbox in the account creation screen), teachers are permitted
to register their students and create accounts for them. For students
who are 13 or older, teachers are not required to obtain written
parental consent. A teacher may inquire about personally identifiable
information that has been collected from a student on Scholastic
Global Classport, or revoke the consent he or she has provided on
behalf of a student's parents by writing to: Scholastic Internet Group, 557 Broadway, New York, New York 10012, Re: Teacher's Request for Information. Teachers can also print, complete and send this
letter to the specified address.
Parents can
also request to review or have deleted their child's personally
identifiable information from Scholastic's records, refuse to permit
further use of a child's information, or request that a child's
email account with Scholastic Global Classport be removed by
writing to: Scholastic Internet Group, 557 Broadway, New York, New York 10012, Re: Parent's Request for Information. Parents can also print, complete and return this
letter to the specified address.
Electronic
Greeting Cards
Scholastic Global Classport members can send electronic greeting
cards, or e-cards, to anyone whose email address they know. E-cards
consist of an image supplied by Scholastic Global Classport, and
space for a greeting and personal message. The recipient receives
an email notification to view the card (which includes the email
address of the sender) and given a uniform resource locator (or
"URL") to visit where the card will be displayed. Scholastic Global
Classport maintains the information required to send and display
the e-card for a period of three months, after which all information
is deleted. Users with monitored email accounts can only use this
feature as part of their monitored email account.
Classroom
Projects
Teachers may also create their own personal email accounts through
Scholastic Global Classport, with the ability to compose and send
messages, upload and add attached files, create and manage folders
and store an address book. Using Scholastic Global Classport, teachers
can locate other classrooms through a search by country, by keyword
and by language. Teachers can use email to participate in collaborative
projects with one or more other classes, and may combine offline
classwork with online collaboration.
Newsletters
Scholastic Global Classport offers its members a monthly online
newsletter on new site features and general internet and educational
information, which is sent to users' individual email accounts.
Members can subscribe at registration by checking the appropriate
box on their registration form. They can unsubscribe at any time
by unchecking the appropriate box on the "Settings" page of their
