"Seven more pixies to go," Violet Briggs sang as she walked home from school. "Seven more pixies to go."
Violet made up the tune as she went along. She felt a little silly, but she couldn't help herself. It seemed all she could think about lately were pixies and fairies.
It all started when she met Sprite, a fairy from the Otherworld. Sprite had asked Violet to help him trick fourteen fairies. The fairies had escaped from his world. They were causing lots of trouble.
Violet had agreed to help Sprite. They had tricked seven pixies so far and sent them back home.
"Seven more pixies to go," Violet sang again.
Tricking pixies was not easy. Each fairy had to be tricked in a different way. Violet never knew what would happen next. But today would be different. Today she knew exactly what would happen.
First she'd do her math homework. Then she and Sprite would work on their plan to catch Hinky Pinky. Hinky Pinky was a fairy who could control the weather. She and Sprite had been trying to catch him from the start.
Then Violet's dad would make spaghetti. He did that every Monday.
It sounded like a good plan. A normal afternoon with no surprises.
Violet skipped to the back of her yellow house. She walked up the steps to the second floor.
Violet's dad gave her a hug.
"Mom's working tonight," he said. "How about I make some spaghetti?"
Violet smiled. "Great!" she said. "I'll be in my room."
Violet skipped down the hallway. She opened the door to her room.
A tiny fairy sat on her dresser.
"Who are you?" the fairy asked.
