The Young Man and the Sea
by Rodman Philbrick
Skiff Beamann has a boatload of problems. Ever since his mother
died, his father doesn't want to get up off the TV coucheven
when the Mary Rose, his fishing boat, sinks at the dock.
Twelve-year-old Skiff's been bailing out Rose by himself
for month, getting up before dawn to pump out the bilge and keep
her floatingjust in case his dad decides to put his beer aside
and get up and go fishing. But once a boat has gone under you can't
bail it out.
Excerpt:
As I row I'm looking over my shoulder. Wishing I could see in the
dark like a cat or something, I see something out there, but what
is it? Could be just a boat anchored on its mooring, farther away
than I think. Distance is hard to judge at night, on the water,
with only the light of the stars to guide you. But then something
moves on the boat and I know.
