The Beast
by Walter Dean Myers
Torn between life at school and life at home, seventeen-year-old Anthony "Spoon" Witherspoon returns to Harlem after his first semester at an exclusive prep school.

Excerpt:
It was New York, my New York, but it felt different. I had only been away three months but I had already lost the feeling for the crowds, the faster pace. Intending to go straight home, I had taken the A train at 34th. Then I remembered what Chanelle had said about having to explain what I had been doing in school. My parents would expect the saem, and I wanted to see Gabi first. I got off the train at 125th and walked down to her block.

This was a great book. Walter Dean Myers is one of the most talented authors in American Literature. This story was compelling and intrigued the reader to keep reading. It was a relatable experience, something that happens in everyday life, and even though we may not all experience it, it is good to know that it is out there. This is a great book and very interesting.

I say this book is quite good and well written. Throughout the whole story something pulls to read more. When I read this book I felt like I was reading someone's real diary. The topic is real and it's believable, I can relate, not many books are like that today.
Kat W. Age 15

It was a great mixture of emotion and I thought that with the emotion, and the fantasy put together, it could make a very vivid picture in your mind, what was really going on in the story.

With great insight, this author explores that desire in all of us when we are young to finally be grown up, and the yearning we all have when we are older to return to our youth. I read this aloud to my young boys and they couldn't get enough of it!

Cornelia Funke created a magical book of kids going into a magical, though dangerous, world. Venice always sounds breathtaking. I felt the same way Prosper and Bo felt about Venice. I loved this book. It has got an articulate vocabulary (educational) and a fun plot (fun). I think it ties everything very well!

A fantasy epic of our time. It kept me guessing. I loved the ending!
