Montmorency and the Assassins
by Eleanor Updale
The 19th century is drawing to a close. For 20 years Montmorency has lived as a gentleman, free of Scarper, his criminally-minded alter ego. But when his young friend, Frank, is caught in the middle of a murderous political plot, Montmorency may have no choice but to call upon his darker side.
Excerpt:
In the darkened hospital room, Montmorency’s skeleton lay illuminated on a flat board a few inches from the floor. Lord George Fox-Selwyn stood in reverential silence with his hat in his hands, looking down at the bones of his old friend. Beside him, Doctor Robert Farcett affectionately pointed out the many place where wounds had repaired themselves after Montmorency’s catastrophic accident nearly a quarter of a century ago. He spoke softly, almost whispering in the gloom.
