Lucas
by Kevin Brooks
Pale blue eyes…a sad smile…who is Lucas, and what makes him so intriguing?

Excerpt:
It was my dad's idea to write about Lucas and Angel and everything else that happened last summer. "It won't make you feel any better," he told me, "it might even make things worse for a while. But you mustn't let the sadness die inside you. You have to give it some life. You have to . . . "

I was haunted by the heart-breaking truth of this story long after I finished. Even when I desperately wanted to put it down as midnight passed, my fingers refused to comply. It showed the cruelty of reality in the most beautiful way. The ending was tragic, but fitting. A must read for anyone who truly wants to grasp the consequences of prejudice fueled by ignorance.

I read this book about two years ago, and I still find myself thinking about it today. Brooks did a wonderful job of showing the consequences of mindless prejudice. I'd recommend this book to anyone over the age of twelve.

Lucas is an amazing book. It really captivates you within the first few pages and Brooks style of writing makes you feel as if you are there with the characters, feeling all their emotions like tension, hatred, love and frustration. It captures your heart and keeps it. It's so inspirational.
Karen A., Age 14

I've never read a book like it. It was so sad it made me cry. I felt horrible for Cait and all she went through that year with her brother. Cait found happiness in Lucas though, and that’s why it's such a great story. Through the bad there's always good. And the good was Lucas.
Kate L., Age 14

This book is amazing. It's really one that gets all your senses going. A page turner with dangers, shocks and twists around every corner. The ending made me cry, I will definitely read this book again.

This book was terrific and heart breaking. I fell in love with Lucas, and sympathized with Cait. The author truly gives you hope that someday you will meet someone as strangely wonderful as Lucas, and I think the ending, although it made me cry for about an hour, lifted the book to another level. A magnificent story.
