A Girl Named Disaster
by Nancy Farmer
A GIRL NAMED DISASTER is the humorous and heart-wrenching story of young girl who discovers her own courage and strength when she makes the dangerous journey from Mozambique to Zimbabwe. What was supposed to have been a short boat trip across the border to find her father, turns into an adventure filled with challenges and danger that spans a year.

Excerpt:
An idea suddenly occurred to Nhamo. "Aunt Chipo! She was possessed by Gore's spirit."

"Oh yes. Chipo," Grandmother said bitterly. "Listen, Little Pumpkin. What I'm about to say will be upsetting, but you need to understand. Your aunt has hated you from the moment you were born. She hated your mother, too. Runako was the one everyone said was pretty. She was the one who did well in school, and the very worst thing Runako did was have a beautiful child one month before Masvita was born. It took all the attention away from Chipo."

I read this book and it was fascinating. The main character, Nhamo, is a girl of about 12 who goes on an action packed adventure. I highly recommend this book to people who like suspense. You should read it!

This book was very exciting. I personally don't like scary books, so some parts were very frightening. Sometimes too many things happened at once and it was very confusing so I had to read many chapters over again. In the end, it was worth it.

This book was great. I love the way the author made little stories within the story it self. This book is a little mature though. I hope Nancy Farmer will write a sequel or another book like it. Don't you agree that it is cool that she lived in Zimbabwe and Mozambique?

I think that A Girl Named Disaster was a wonderful book because it told how a young girl in Africa could explore many different countries on her own. That means that the girl was dedicated to what she was doing and she believed she could do it. I think that this book should be given to all children that love to learn about other countries and there heritages.
