Esperanza Rising
by Pam Muņoz Ryan
Esperanza and Mama are forced to flee their comfortable lives in Mexico and adjust to life in a California labor camp.

Excerpt:
The wind blew hard that night and the house moaned and whistled. Instead of dreaming of birthday songs, Esperanza's sleep was filled with nightmares. An enormous bear was chasing her, getting closer and closer and finally folding her in a tight embrace. Its fur caught in her mouth, making it hard to breathe. Someone tried to pull the bear away but couldn't. The bear squeezed harder until it was smothering Esperanza.

I read this book in fourth grade, and I could read it over and over. Not only is it a great read, but it talks about how Esperanza is rich and then makes a big drop, and then is very humble. I recommend this book to girls in fourth and fifth grade.

I read this book two years ago, but read it again and still love it. It reminds you to have hope in times of sadness. It shows you to be thankful living in America with the freedom that we have and how it wasn't an easy trip for freedom, not just for Mexicans but immigrants all around.

I think this book is truly amazing. I am a very emotional person and reading this book about the Great Depression made me realize Esperanza did love her father but didn't think about him twenty-four-seven. It was also very to see how people were treated back in the day.

This book is truly amazing. I am Mexican, and reading this book helped me realize how hard it really was during the Great Depression. While reading this book, I would try to take a break but I just couldn't stop. It is really interesting and it is a great book for kids like me to read because now I really know how it was back in the day.
Bianca R. Age 13

I thought it was a great book cause of how the story twists and turns to a story about her family and it changes once her father dies to how her and Miguel have a crush.
Nanette A. Age 11

I can really relate to this book because I know how hard it is to move and not know a lot of English. But Esperanza went through a lot and it's very sad. I bought a copy of this book so I can read it again and again.
