Born Confused
by Tanuja Desai Hidier
Trapped between the Indian traditions of her parents and the trends of her peer, Dimple searches for herself, love, and her own culture.

Excerpt:
She'd told him I was the Indian girl. The Indian girl. Somehow neither description rang completely true to me, in terms of how I felt inside, but thing was I'd never really consciously thought of myself as American, either. Of course I did the Pledge, too, along with everyone else for years of mornings, but like everyone else I wasn't really thinking about the words.

This book it awesome it has totally inspired me in many ways. The character of Dimple is just so extraordinary. She can make you laugh, cry and furious all at once. This book is a one of a kind.  I have read this book many times now but it still has the same effect on me every time.

This was a great book to read. It’s about an American Indian girl who thinks that she was born confused.  It has little romance too!

I actually read this book because it was required for my high school. It was amazing and basically summed up my life. Everyone should give it a try- you may surprise yourself.

I just absolutely, totally, completely, and supremely LOVED this book!!  I am also an Indian and I also experience some of the things that Dimple does.
First of all, I don't read many books but as I saw it, I was like "Wow, it seems interesting".  So I took it home and I read it in two days.  That's 400 page book in two days.  Now you can imagine how good this book is! I just LOVED it and I am dead serious!!!
Fiza M. Age 18

This probably one of the most blow-me-away type of book that I have ever read. I love how it is so lifelike, like a real teen wrote it. I highly recommended this book, I give it two thumbs way up!
JoAnna G. Age 13

I am an Indian, a genuine product of the subcontinent. It was fascinating to finally understand completely, just how my cousins in the states see my world. When I read the book, I related to every word Ms. Desai wrote. I absolutely loved the way Ms. Desai uses words, to create pictures that are so beautiful, and oh so right! Thanks Ms. Desai, and I am waiting for the sequel.
Rashmi V. Age 17

I loved this book so much. I think that so many girls can relate to dimple Indian or otherwise.
Morgan G. Age 13

I loved it and it was scary how I related to it. It is a must read for all Indians living abroad.

I absolutely loved this book. I'm from Congo, and grew up in America, so I found that I could relate to Dimple Lala on so many levels. I felt like I was actually a part of the book. This is for sure one of my favorite books. The best one I've ever read
Joelle K. Age 15

I loved it could not put it down. I just couldn't believe how much I could relate to it. I really hope that there is a sequel soon. I can't wait!!
Sophia F. Age 16

Being an American-born Indian, I really related to Dimple. I'm the kind of person who is usually uncomfortable with having to deal with the two opposing cultures in which I live. Born Confused definitely inspired me to learn more about my heritage. Altogether an amazing book... I couldn't put it down. I hope there's a sequel.
Ayesha F. Age 17

I loved this book. It appropriately portrays the problems that occur in the second generation of all cultures, not just Indian. It has helped me understand that it is normal for me to be lost between my culture at home and the one at school.
Erica S. Age 15

I can totally understand what Dimple's going through because I relate to her so well. I really liked this book because of that. I live in two cultures, which can be troublesome. This book sort of reflects my life and in what I do. True, this book did have a slow beginning but it grabbed my attention. I couldn't put it down. I would recommend this to anyone!
Angelina L. Age 13

I think this book is really good. So far, it's my favorite book. I've never read a book that can make you laugh, cry, and get mad all in one book. I never wanted to put it down. It has that effect on you. As the end came I was really dreading it. I just didn't want it to end. I would recommend this to everyone. This book is really inspirational; it shows you how Dimple deals with things and how she has to choose between two cultures. I can't wait until Ms. Tanuja writes a sequel.
Aisha A. Age 14

This book is my favorite now. I am a south Asian teenager also and I related so much to Dimple's experiences. The way she has to deal with having a culture but also wanting to fit in, in her American one. I couldn't believe how much this book was real. This book made me laugh, cry and get mad. I felt like I was in the book. I couldn't put it down. I didn't want it to end either. This book helped me find myself and I think every teenager should read it. Everyone can relate. The only thing is, where's the sequel?
Serah R. Age 16

Born Confused amazed me! This book approaches all the things teens deal with - parents, best friends, guys, the desire to fit in, and especially confusion over identity- in an unbelievably fresh, witty, and completely honest way. I laughed with Dimple, I cried with her, and she inspired me. You are definitely missing out if you don't read this book!
Simy L. Age 17

This book is totally engaging in that no matter who you are you can relate to Dimple. It should be made into a movie.
Lezlie W. Age 15

This book had me hooked. It began slow but as the story started unraveling I think everyone can relate to the problems Dimple deals with. It was an inspirational story that led the reader on a path through two cultures and dimples battle in trying to decide which she belonged to.
Jemma P. Age 17

I really enjoyed this book because it woke me up. I never really appreciated my culture until I read this book. I am Indian as well so I could relate to this book very well. It actually explains me a lot better than I could explain myself. This book helped me find me.
Monika A. Age 17

I liked this story quite a bit and I recommend this to ne1 who wants a good read, although the author tended to branch off on subjects that had nothing to do w. the dialogue, but all and all this book had a good plot and a great climax... I couldn't put it down...but at the same time I didn't want to finish.... I give it two thumbs way up
Remy S. Age 16

This book is extremely good. I am Indian as well, so for me I could understand all the terminology and what was so surprising was that some of the feelings that Dimple states are similar to what I feel sometime. I recommend this book to everyone and it a must-read for all the people in the Indian community.
Soni C. Age 17

This is my absolute favorite book. I read it in a day and stayed up all night. I seriously hope there will be a sequel. I think every teenage girl should read it.
Katie L.

I love this book it is my favorite book it just gets better and better as you read it and I could not put it down! It was amazing.
Melissa M., Age 14

I love this book so much; there are just so many good things to be said about it that I could go on for hours. I highly recommend this book, especially to second generation teens who are feeling a bit confused about their cultural identity.

Carley B. Age 13

Wow, where do I begin? This book totally blew me away. I think it is my new favorite book. No, it IS my new favorite book. As I was reading my way through the book, I was loving it more and more...I didn't want it to ever finish, but in the end it was wonderful. I know it will be one of those books I remember my entire life.
Rita G. Age 15

Awesome book! At first I wasn't sure if I should read it (it looked so long) but it was totally worth it. No matter what your situation is, this is a must read.
Lauren B Age 14

This book was amazing. It's totally different from other books, it's unique and fun to read. I could not stop reading this book whenever I started. This is one of my most favorite books, I love it!
Meeta G. Age 13

This enlightened me about the wonders of the Hindu culture. This is my favorite book of all history. I fell in love with Dimple's character. This book really expanded the boundaries of my mind and helped me think out of the box. A perfect example of one of the book's prime messages: Sometimes you have to lose yourself to be found. My only negative comment is this: When's the sequel, Tanuja?
Kristina L Age 13

There is so much to say about this book. It has you find yourself in a way you never imagined. In a way I related to Dimple. This book really helped me find myself because I am Mexican-American and sometimes I feel that way too. I recommend this book to all teenagers.
Victoria G. Age 13

This is surely an amazing book. I had a blast reading this book and the plot just keeps getting better as you read it. The great aspect of this book is that it's not only for South Asian people. Anyone that is looking for a good read can enjoy this novel that is full of unexpected twists and adventure. This novel is one of my favorites!
Samantha, L Age 16
