StarFall : Phaeton and the Chariot of the Sun
by Michael Cadnum
In a time when gods ruled the heaven and the earth, there lived a young man named Phaeton, who desperately wanted to believe that he was the son of the mighty Apollo, god of the sun. Uncertain yet hopeful, Phaeton resolves to undertake a long and dangerous journey to the gates of dawn in order to confront Apollo and uncover the truth.

Excerpt:
The young man did not want to say what he was thinking, even as the old campaigner lifted his pelta — a crescent-shaped shield: Be careful, honored Aristander - your best fighting days are past.

Phaeton's youthful half sisters joined them, long-limbed Phaethusa, nearly as fleet of foot as her brother, and Lampetia, who made birds and beasts out of red river clay.

This book is one of the best fantasy books I have read. There is no shortage of action, no shortage of emotions, and so shortage of beautiful scenery and lots of interesting creatures.
