The Devil's Toenail
by Sally Prue
This is Stevie's chance to impress the gang at his new schoolthe
best gang who does cool things, like graffiti and nicking stuff
from shops. This is his chance to be part of the gang and not its
prey, not this time. The gang wants him to set fire to something.
But Stevie's afraid of fire
.Then Stevie finds an ancient,
shell-like fossil he'd heard about once: a "devil's toenail."
This strange, grooved stone seems to have a special powersthe
power to bring out the worst in him. With the devil's toenail in
hand, he could prove to the gang, and himself, that he's not afraid.
Then no one could hurt him ever again. Right?
Excerpt:
I put the devil's toenail on the ground cloth. Then I knelt in front
of it and curled the hair round it into a circle.
That looked classy, sort of magicalnot that I believe
in magic, obviously, haven't for ages, not ever, really: not ordinary
sorts of magic, anyway. But this was something different. Something
special.
