Ildred was desperate.  Only Lady Mary could help, and that was the unfairest thing of all, because Ildred hated Lady Mary.  Ildred’s parents had had nine children, and Ildred the last.  By the time Ildred was fourteen and old enough for marriage, there was no money, no land, and no dowry.  Ildred would have married anybody – even a fisherman by the sea or a shepherd in the hills.  But her parents said that was beneath the family.  They farmed her out to Lady Macbeth as a companion – Lady Macbeth, who needed no company but her husband.  Ildred ran errands or did the hateful sewing for the beautiful gowns, were they passed on to Ildred?  No.  They went to Lady Mary.
